Van Dijk Howler Hands Villarreal Shock Lead as Liverpool Storm Back at Anfield
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk produced a defensive howler that handed Villarreal a shock lead inside four minutes at Anfield, sparking a chaotic opening spell in which the Spanish visitors raced two goals ahead before the Reds fought their way back.
Van Dijk's fourth-minute disaster
With Villarreal lumping the ball forward from the halfway line, Van Dijk completely misjudged his header back to goalkeeper Alisson Becker, getting far too much on the ball when all he needed was a flick down. He inadvertently looped it up and into the path of Villarreal striker Georges Mikautadze, who controlled and finished past Alisson with aplomb to silence Anfield.
"Mikautadze can't believe his luck," Alan Shearer said on TNT Sports commentary, highlighting that the error was already the Liverpool captain's third of the match's opening few minutes.
"Liverpool's back four made an absolute mess of it after about 30 or 40 seconds, and Van Dijk has just done exactly the same there. Absolute nightmare from Van Dijk.
"A clear header. You can see what he's trying to do. It wasn't a great clearance from Alisson, and then the ball gets played over the top, and really under no pressure at all, Van Dijk just tries to guide it back to Alisson. He gets it all wrong. Too much on it."
Villarreal double up as Shearer calls Liverpool 'lazy'
Villarreal doubled their lead inside the half-hour mark through Sergi Cardona, the Spaniards taking full advantage of Liverpool's lethargic play.
Shearer did not hold back on the home side, branding them "lazy" and declaring: "I don't remember as bad a half an hour as this from a Liverpool team." The Independent's own report framed the opening spell as potentially the worst start of the Andoni Iraola era.
Reds claw their way back
After a rocky start, Liverpool clawed their way back to level pegging following goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Ronald Araujo before half-time. The Reds improved vastly after the break and gained the advantage through Mac Allister's second of the night, before Florian Wirtz scored his first of the season to give the home side daylight.
The comeback came on the back of a perfect start to Liverpool's Champions League campaign. They have won both of their matches so far this season, beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 in their league-phase opener before hitting six against LASK last week.
Mikautadze's numbers
Mikautadze arrived at Anfield in form at domestic level. According to a FotMob player snapshot taken on 20 October 2026, the Villarreal forward had made nine appearances in the 2026-27 LaLiga season, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
