Fabregas rejects ‘crisis’ talk as Manchester United arrive in Como

Como coach says United’s struggles are no crisis

Cesc Fabregas has dismissed talk of a crisis at Manchester United ahead of Como’s Champions League meeting with the English club, insisting that football’s demanding schedule leaves little room for such labels.

“I don’t believe in crises,” Fabregas told reporters. “You have a game every three days, it’s 11 against 11, and you’ve got to give your best. A crisis is invented by you journalists.”

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick

United travel to the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia without a win in their last six matches in all competitions. Michael Carrick’s side drew 1-1 with Leeds United on Sunday and have won just once in their first seven Premier League matches of the 2026-27 season, alongside four draws and two defeats. The report describes that as their fewest victories at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 1986-87.

Their European campaign began with a win over Sabah, but United were beaten 2-0 by Atletico Madrid in their second Champions League match. After that defeat, Lisandro Martinez criticised the club’s hierarchy, arguing that the squad was not equipped to compete in Europe and directing blame at technical director Jason Wilcox and the owners.

Como seek another landmark European night

Como arrive in contrasting league form. They are fifth in Serie A with 14 points from seven matches and responded to a European defeat by beating Fiorentina 3-1 away from home. Their Champions League debut was a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig.

Wednesday’s fixture will be the first meeting between Como and Manchester United, and it will also bring Fabregas and Carrick together as opposing managers. The pair previously faced each other as players in the 2008-09 Champions League semi-finals, when United beat Arsenal 4-1 on aggregate.

Fabregas called the game “another historic day for the club, the fans and the city” and urged his side to approach it with focus and ambition. He said Como would study United’s weaknesses while remaining committed to their own strengths, adding that “football is ultimately about the players.”
