Wirtz ends Liverpool scoring drought with first goal of the season
Wirtz finds the net as Liverpool rally past Villarreal
Florian Wirtz ended his scoring drought for Liverpool by netting his first goal of the season in a 4-3 Champions League victory over Villarreal. The win preserved Liverpool’s perfect record in the competition.

Wirtz had supplied assists in Liverpool’s wins over LASK and Brentford in the preceding week. His goal against Villarreal means he has now directly contributed to a goal in three consecutive Liverpool matches for the first time.
The Germany international came on at half-time, replacing Ronald Araujo, who had scored Liverpool’s second goal as the side recovered from a two-goal deficit. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola had started on the bench for load-management reasons.
Wirtz has faced criticism over his early spell on Merseyside, but this run of contributions offers a timely lift. Liverpool’s next assignment is Brighton at Anfield, followed by matches against Chelsea and Arsenal.
