Bayern Munich crush RB Leipzig 6-1 as Kane hails 'statement' win and Diaz hits hat-trick

Bayern Munich thrashed RB Leipzig 6-1 on Saturday to deliver what captain Harry Kane described as a much-needed statement of intent from the Bundesliga champions.

Harry Kane celebrating during Bayern Munich's win over RB Leipzig

Kane: "We made a statement from the first minute"

Kane was central to the demolition, scoring one goal and setting up two more. The England striker reached a remarkable personal landmark, netting his 102nd goal in his 100th Bundesliga appearance — more than any other player has managed in their first 100 games in the competition.

"After the last two results, I think it was important to make a statement, and we did that from the first minute," Kane said. "I think we had enough chances in the last two games to score goals and win, but we didn't get the results we wanted. There was more talk than usual, so it was important to keep cool heads and avoid mistakes.

"And we did that from start to finish, from front to back. It was excellent. When you score six goals against an opponent like that, you can be really proud."

Diaz's second Bundesliga hat-trick

Luis Diaz was the headline act, scoring his second Bundesliga hat-trick — he had previously hit three in a 5-1 win against Hoffenheim in February. The winger was directly involved in four goals in a single Bundesliga match for the first time, with three goals and one assist.

Eberl hails the intensity

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl was delighted with the response after two unconvincing results. "That was really impressive. We were focused and all over them from the start," Eberl said. "We'd caused ourselves issues at times in the last two games. We really wanted to avoid that today. We put Leipzig under so much pressure that they were forced into mistakes.

"At times you can't blame the opposition because we were just so good. The size of the score is also deserved. It was a very good performance.

"We need this stability in the weeks ahead. We had almost 50 shots in the last two games, but there were also moments where we weren't alert enough. We showed what we can do. When the guys see that what we plan to do works, then you also see that joy on the pitch."

A record-breaking home start

The victory also rewrote the Bundesliga record books. Bayern became the first team in the competition's history to score 18 goals in their opening three home matches of a season, surpassing their own previous mark of 17 set in 2020-21. They also registered 17 shots on target — their highest tally in a Bundesliga match since August 2022, when they managed 20 against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The rout arrived on the back of draws against Augsburg and Viking that had raised questions about the champions' early-season form. Prior match coverage noted that Michael Olise and Aleksander Pavlovic also got on the scoresheet as Bayern ran riot.

What's next

Bayern's focus now turns to a Champions League meeting with Arsenal. Ahead of the Leipzig clash, boss Vincent Kompany — speaking on 16 October — had insisted the side were "not far off our best version" despite the stuttering start, pointing to the volume of chances created.

On this evidence, against an opponent of Leipzig's calibre, the champions delivered exactly the performance their hierarchy had been calling for.
