Reece James faces lengthy layoff after knee surgery

Chelsea captain’s return could stretch into the new year

Reece James faces a prolonged spell out after undergoing successful surgery on a knee injury picked up in training before Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth. Xabi Alonso said the club would take a cautious approach and could not rule out the captain being unavailable until after Christmas.

The club described the operation as minor, but Alonso made clear that James’s recovery would take longer than a few weeks. “It’s not going to be short, it’s not going to be two or three weeks, it’s going to be longer,” he said. “We’ll see before Christmas, after Christmas. Time will tell. Things have to be done properly.”

James had hoped to build on his start to the season after an injury-disrupted career. He made 29 Premier League appearances last season, his highest league total since 2020-21. Alonso said the squad was disappointed for him and stressed that the defender remained an important presence even while unavailable.

Chelsea expect to manage in his absence with their available players. Moises Caicedo made his first start of the season against Bournemouth, while Jordan Henderson scored his first two goals for the club in that match. Romeo Lavia, another player with a history of fitness problems, has so far begun the season without injury.

James was not among the England players who withdrew during the international break, but the injury is likely to rule him out of the next international window, when England are scheduled to face Croatia at Wembley and Spain away.
