Flick Eyes Leipzig's Lukeba to Shore Up Barcelona Defence After Araújo Exit
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has identified RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba as a prime target to bolster the Catalan club's defensive ranks, according to reports from Spain.
The news comes via Blaugrana insider Gerard Romero, who revealed on a live stream for Spanish outlet Jijantes that Flick is a keen admirer of the French centre-back's talents. Lukeba, who currently plies his trade in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, fits the profile of a left-footed central defender that Barcelona are actively seeking.
Barcelona's pursuit of defensive reinforcements has intensified in recent weeks following the departure of Ronald Araújo, who made the switch to Liverpool. The Uruguayan's exit has left the Spanish champions looking notably short on depth at the heart of defence, prompting sporting director Deco and his team to scour the market for potential opportunities.
Flick's Preference Clear
According to Romero's revelations, while several options have been discussed, it is Lukeba who has captured the imagination of the German tactician. Speaking on Jijantes, Romero explained:
"Barça could start looking to sign a left-footed centre-back. Laporte has been offered, while the coach, Hansi Flick, really likes Castello Lukeba. There are also other options, a bit less prioritized."
The mention of Aymeric Laporte — who has been offered to the club — adds another dimension to Barcelona's search. However, it appears that Flick's preference leans towards the younger Lukeba, who has established himself as one of the most promising defensive talents in the Bundesliga since his move to Leipzig.
With the transfer window still open, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will formalise their interest in the Leipzig star or opt for a more experienced alternative. What is clear, however, is that the club are actively working to address a glaring gap in Flick's squad before the deadline.
