Real Sociedad rout Lillestrøm 6-0 to equal record European away win as Sergio Gómez becomes club's top Europa League scorer
Real Sociedad match Lillestrøm demolition with club record
Real Sociedad produced a stunning 6-0 victory over Lillestrøm at Åråsen Stadion on Thursday to claim their first Europa League league-phase win of the 2026-27 season — and in the process matched the biggest away win in the club's European history.

Left-back Sergio Gómez was the hero, scoring twice to put the visitors in control and become Real Sociedad's top scorer in the competition ahead of Lyon's visit to Anoeta. The scoreline equalled the biggest away win in the club's European history, according to Noticias de Gipuzkoa. The mark dates from a 6-0 win at Vardar on matchday three in 2017, a game UEFA described at the time as the biggest away win in Europa League history.
Oyarzabal's creativity settles it early
Lillestrøm had the better of the opening exchanges and pressed the visitors hard, but within eight minutes Oyarzabal's creativity turned the match. Sergio Gómez struck in the 25th and 27th minutes — the first with his left foot, the second a delicate right-footed finish past Dahlberg. Luka Sučić added the third in the 33rd minute.
The hosts were handed a route back into the contest after the break when Thomas Lehne Olsen missed a penalty in the 50th minute. Real Sociedad made them pay, with Orri Steinn Óskarsson making it four in the 64th minute from a Gonçalo Guedes assist. Sučić scored again in the 72nd, before Arsen Zakharyan completed the rout in the 80th from Benat Turrientes's pass.
A left-back leads the European scoring charts
No Real Sociedad player has scored more in this season's competition than Sergio Gómez, whose opening European goal came in the defeat to Bournemouth. The data provider rated him 9.04 for the night, just ahead of Sučić on 9.02.
The numbers behind the rout
Despite the lopsided scoreline, the underlying figures point to a closer contest than the result suggests. Expected goals finished 2.29 for Lillestrøm against 2.46 for Real Sociedad, with the hosts taking 14 shots to 16. The decisive gap lay in accuracy: Real Sociedad put 8 shots on target to Lillestrøm's 2, while also enjoying 56% of possession.
For Lillestrøm, the defeat compounds a difficult start. They had lost 2-1 at home to Torreense and drawn 1-1 at Sparta Praha in their first two league-phase games.
What's next
Matarazzo's side had struggled before Thursday, losing 2-1 at home to Bournemouth on matchday one and drawing 1-1 away to Union SG on matchday two. Real Sociedad now return to LaLiga against Levante at Anoeta on Sunday 25 October, with the matchday 10 fixture kicking off at 17:30. Later European dates include a trip to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on 26 November, Torreense at home on 10 December, and the league phase ending away to Juventus on 28 January 2027.
