Three Key Targets, Three Different Challenges

With less than three weeks remaining until the transfer window slams shut, FC Barcelona still have significant business to complete. The club's targets are no secret, but a growing sense of urgency is beginning to take hold at Camp Nou as sporting director Deco scrambles to get deals over the line.

Rodri: Personal Terms Agreed, Price Still a Hurdle

Barcelona have reportedly agreed personal terms with World Cup hero Rodri, but negotiations with Manchester City over the transfer fee remain ongoing. The Catalan club are haggling over the price, and there is a growing concern that if a deal cannot be struck, Rodri will see out the final year of his contract at the Etihad. Barcelona are wary of paying top dollar for a player who is over 30 and recently dealt with a significant injury, particularly one entering the last year of his deal.

Julián Alvarez: Atlético Holding Firm

Reports suggest Barcelona have not given up on signing Julián Alvarez, but Atlético de Madrid have made it abundantly clear that they have no interest in a sale. If Barcelona cannot land the Argentine striker, they will need to accelerate plans for an alternative — and as of now, there is no obvious candidate. This is particularly significant given the ongoing negotiation over the sale of Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain. With Torres potentially departing and Robert Lewandowski already having left for the Chicago Fire, Barcelona risk entering the season critically short of attacking options. There remains a chance that Barcelona cannot find a suitable replacement and instead retains Torres, despite lingering concerns over his inconsistency.

João Cancelo: A Familiar Standoff

Perhaps the most frustrating saga of the summer surrounds João Cancelo. The Portuguese full-back, who has already had two previous spells at Barcelona, is eager to return. However, his current club, Al-Hilal, are playing hardball over the terms of his departure, despite the widely held understanding that neither Cancelo nor the Saudi club genuinely wants the relationship to continue. Barcelona remain confident that Al-Hilal will eventually relent and acquiesce to their demands — but the clock is ticking.

Time Running Out

Barcelona still have time to complete all of these deals. With the exception of the Alvarez pursuit, most of the negotiations revolve around haggling over price and are ultimately doable. However, with every passing day, the likelihood of each deal diminishes. And as is often the case in football, late sales rarely benefit anyone — not the selling club, not the buying club, and certainly not the player.
