Monaco are holding talks with Paul Pogba over the mutual termination of his contract after the midfielder made just six appearances for the Ligue 1 club.

Fitness concerns behind Monaco exit talks

The discussions have been ongoing for several weeks and concern the two-year agreement Pogba signed after joining Monaco on a free transfer last summer. The club had hoped to help the 33-year-old World Cup winner return to his previous fitness levels but now believe they have been unable to do so.

Pogba sustained a hamstring injury at St. George’s Park on Tuesday while Monaco were based there for their pre-season tour of England. The injury is feared to keep him out for several months, further complicating his prospects at the club.

A brief Monaco spell after a long absence

The former Manchester United midfielder made his Monaco debut in November 2025, his first competitive appearance since September 2023. His return followed an anti-doping ban: an initial four-year suspension issued in February 2024 was reduced to 18 months on appeal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Pogba became eligible to resume training in January and playing in March. He had been a free agent since leaving Juventus in November 2024 before Monaco offered him a route back into professional football.

A 2018 World Cup winner with France, Pogba has won four Serie A titles with Juventus and made 190 appearances for the Turin club. He has earned 91 caps for France, although he has not played for the national team since 2022.
