Arteta hails 'phenomenal' Tzolis debut as Arsenal sweep past Coventry in season opener
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta heaped praise on debutant Christos Tzolis following a dazzling performance in the Gunners' 3-0 opening-day Premier League victory over Coventry City at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal began their title defence in commanding fashion, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Odegaard all getting on the scoresheet. However, it was summer arrival Tzolis who captured much of the spotlight with his incisive attacking play on the wing.
Tzolis was instrumental in both of Arsenal's first-half goals. The Greek international initially won possession back from Milan van Ewijk to allow Riccardo Calafiori to cross for Havertz's opener. In the 23rd minute, Tzolis delivered a dangerous cross that Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only push into the path of Saka, who easily converted from close range.
Arteta Praises Summer Signing's Impact
Despite not scoring, Tzolis led all Arsenal players with four shots and eight touches inside the opposition box, while also creating three scoring opportunities. The winger joined Arsenal following an exceptional campaign with Club Brugge, where he recorded 22 goals and 29 assists across all competitions in 2025-26 as a replacement for Leandro Trossard.
"I love that a player that has been with us just for a few weeks gets this kind of energy every time he's on the ball," Arteta said post-match. "I think he's earned it. I think the way he has performed in the last few games has been phenomenal."
"What he transmits as a player is so direct, so incisive, constantly. He wants to make things happen, and he has done an incredible variety of actions in the last 30 metres. I think it's up to him to make the right decisions. Even the spaces are sometimes really, really small. I'm very happy with him."
Milestone Win for Arteta and Arsenal
The win marked Arteta's 150th Premier League victory as Arsenal manager, achieving the feat in just 249 matches—making him one of only five managers in competition history to reach 150 wins in fewer than 250 games.
The result also matched Arsenal's joint-biggest opening-day home victory in the Premier League, equaling their 3-0 win over Manchester City in 1994-95. The Gunners extended their historic unbeaten home streak against newly promoted teams to 46 matches (41 wins, 5 draws).
"There was a lot to like about that performance," Arteta added. "It was a good result, but the manner in which we started the game—such domination, such clarity, such understanding and flow in the game—was really impressive."
Bruno Guimaraes Injury Update
Arsenal were without £75m summer signing Bruno Guimaraes, who sustained a knock during the Community Shield and was seen with ice on his right leg. Arteta, however, provided an encouraging assessment regarding the midfielder's condition.
"We expect that not to be weeks at all," Arteta stated. "Let's see how he evolves this week. He didn't even want to stop. He wanted to carry on. Now we start to understand the character of the player, but I don't expect that to be a big issue."
