Mathys Tel hails massive energy shift at Tottenham under new boss Roberto De Zerbi
Mathys Tel believes a dramatic transformation in energy and togetherness is already revitalising Tottenham Hotspur under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, following a dominant 3-0 pre-season victory over Hoffenheim.
Spurs endured a torrid previous campaign, finishing 17th in the Premier League and only securing top-flight survival with a tense 1-0 win over Everton on the final day. However, the mood around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has lifted significantly since De Zerbi took charge ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Tottenham showcased their new attacking identity on Saturday against their German opponents. Richarlison opened the scoring in the 35th minute before highly rated teenager Mikey Moore netted a second-half brace to wrap up an impressive performance.
French forward Tel was at the heart of Tottenham's best attacking moves, setting up both of Moore's goals while leading the team in chances created (three) and joint-leading in completed dribbles (three).
'We Can Feel It on the Pitch'
Speaking after the match, Tel highlighted the noticeable change in atmosphere and tactical intensity brought about by De Zerbi.
"I would say the energy has been the big difference. Last year we missed this energy, and now we can feel it on the pitch," Tel told SpursPlay. "The manager is behind us, always with us. We can see on the pitch, off the pitch, we are together. I'm very happy, and I'm excited about the new season."
New-Look Spurs squad takes shape
The friendly win came amid a major squad overhaul in north London. The clash was Tottenham's first fixture since Cristian Romero's departure to Atletico Madrid was officially confirmed, with new central defensive pairing Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke starting at the back.
De Zerbi's side have also seen Djed Spence leave to join Serie A champions Inter, while defender Ashley Phillips completed a reported £20m transfer to Middlesbrough. Phillips was joined at Boro by fellow Spurs departure Will Lankshear, who scored a brace in a 2-1 Championship victory against Lincoln on Saturday.
