Flick names 24-man group for Sankt Jakob-Park

Hansi Flick has named his Barcelona squad for Sunday’s friendly against FC Basel at Sankt Jakob-Park in Switzerland, with 24 players heading to Basel but no place in the travelling party for Pedri and Gavi.

The Barcelona boss confirmed both midfielders are working on specific training plans right now and are not expected to feature in the penultimate pre-season game before the start of the season.

Pedri eased back after World Cup

Pedri is currently training away from the rest of his teammates in Flick’s squad as the club eases the midfielder back into a prominent role.

The 23-year-old is fresh off playing his part in Spain’s triumphant campaign at the 2026 World Cup. After being afforded an extended vacation by the club, Pedri returned to base in Catalunya’s capital earlier this week.

Fellow Spanish internationals Lamine Yamal and Gavi have already linked back up with the rest of the Blaugrana’s ranks in group training, while extra caution is being exercised with Pedri. As confirmed across Barcelona’s social media platforms, the former Las Palmas talent is being put through ‘a specific training program during his first days of pre-season’.

He is therefore not expected to feature on Sunday, when the La Liga champions lock horns with Swiss outfit Basel in a friendly clash.

Injury and transfer absences

Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji miss out due to injury. There is also no place in the travelling squad for several fringe players expected to depart before the transfer window closes.

The game is Barcelona’s penultimate friendly before the start of the season. Flick’s side will return from Switzerland to face Al Ahly in the Gamper Trophy on Wednesday.
