Barcelona complete €76.5m signing of Rodri from Manchester City
Barcelona have officially confirmed the marquee signing of Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder Rodri from Manchester City in a deal worth a reported €76.5 million (£65 million).
Following extensive negotiations, Manchester City sanctioned the departure of the 30-year-old Spain international, paving the way for him to put pen to paper in Catalunya and link up with Hansi Flick’s squad.
Speaking at his official media presentation, Rodri expressed his deep admiration for Blaugrana icon Sergio Busquets when asked about the players he looks up to in his position.
“Sergio Busquets has always been a great role model,” Rodri stated. “It’s a privilege that they compare me to him.”
Maresca labels departure a 'win-win'
New Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca addressed the departure of the midfielder, acknowledging his immense status while insisting the timing made sense for all parties involved.
“Rodri is a top player,” Maresca told Sky Sports. “Any club or manager wants to work with Rodri. The reason why is that he is a top player. There is no way to continue, and it is normal that the player takes a different decision, a different way or path. It is a moment of change.”
“All the fans, the club, are all thankful to Rodri. But I also think it is a win-win. The club will be thankful to Rodri and Rodri has to be thankful to the club and the fans. Win for win!”
A decorated legacy in Manchester
Rodri departs Manchester City after a glittering seven-year spell following his arrival from Atletico Madrid in July 2019. The midfielder made 298 appearances across all competitions, finding the net 28 times—most famously scoring the winner against Inter in the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League final.
During his stay at the Etihad Stadium, Rodri claimed 13 major trophies alongside widespread individual accolades. On the international stage, he won Euro 2024 with Spain and followed it up by lifting the World Cup and claiming the Golden Ball award, cementing his reputation as one of the world's premier central midfielders.
His influence on City was underscored by their 71.5% win rate when he featured on the pitch, losing only 36 matches. Without him, City's win rate dropped to 63.3% across 120 fixtures. Rodri also led the club in total passes (24,442), successful passes (22,466), and touches (27,658) throughout his tenure, trailing only Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden in total appearances.
