Postbag: readers eye January Aguirre–Gordon reunion and tee off at Tuchel
Wednesday’s Football Daily postbag brought a January date to circle for fans of Spanish football, plus fresh gripes over England’s substitutions against Argentina.
Jim Hearson, named letter o’ the day winner, reacted to the news that Javier Aguirre had joined Valencia by scrambling to see when they would play Anthony Gordon’s Barcelona — only to discover the reunion will not come until the end of January. “Hey, fixture list, beep you,” he wrote, earning himself a copy of Jonathan Wilson’s Behind the Curtain.
Dexter O’ Riordan, meanwhile, offered his own statistics on England supporters’ sentiment towards Thomas Tuchel. He estimated that a significant percentage of fans — around 51.8% — now turn on their heels and walk in the opposite direction, muttering furiously to themselves, when they spot the England manager. A further cohort, which he put at roughly 37.6%, may break down weeping and gnashing their teeth at a missed opportunity to beat “a limited and cynical Argentinian team”, thereby missing their chance to congratulate Tuchel on England’s knockout win over Democratic Republic of Congo.
