Gabriel Jesus Says Guardiola Is 'Much More Tactical' Than Flick: 'Both Approaches Work'

Gabriel Jesus has offered a rare insight into life under two of the game's most recognisable coaches, describing Pep Guardiola as "much more tactical" than Hansi Flick while insisting both men produce winning teams.

The Barcelona striker, who left Arsenal for the Catalan club in the summer, worked under Guardiola at Manchester City before joining Flick's project at Barcelona, and he used a club-media interview to spell out the differences between the two.

"Guardiola was much more tactical"

Jesus framed the contrast as one of structure versus intensity, arguing that Guardiola's City side was built on a detailed, possession-based blueprint while Flick's Barcelona is built on individual responsibility and relentless physical work.

"Guardiola was much more tactical, with a plan based on building from the back which did in a league where it's not common."

"With Flick, you have to be yourself, play simply when necessary, and run, press, and help out much more. Both approaches work and produce results."

A familiar face in the dressing room

The Brazilian has also been reunited with several former team-mates at Barcelona, having played alongside both Joao Cancelo and Rodri during his time with Guardiola at Manchester City.

Asked about the relationships he has rebuilt in Catalonia, Jesus singled out the Portugal full-back.

"I get along very well with everyone, but, as I've already said, I had many experiences with Joao Cancelo during my time with Manchester City. I talk to him a lot. Yes, I'd say Joao."

He added that the warmth of the squad came as no shock to him, having been given a positive picture of the environment before he even arrived.

"I think everyone is a good person. It wasn't a surprise because I'd already been told that the dressing room was one of this team's strengths."

Fresh legs for the Getafe test

Jesus was one of the few Barcelona players not involved with their national teams over the international break, leaving him with a full fortnight of training at the club while much of the squad scattered across the globe.

He will now be hoping for game time on Saturday, when Flick's side return to LaLiga action against Getafe.

Barcelona's Premier League arrivals compare notes

Jesus is not the first of Barcelona's recent Premier League imports to weigh Flick's methods against Guardiola's. As reported on 24 September 2026, midfielder Rodri said he was taken aback by the intensity of Flick's training after swapping Manchester City for Barcelona, describing the German's physical demands as "totally different" from Guardiola's approach.

Jesus's own move to Barcelona followed a difficult ending to his Arsenal spell. As he said on 11 September 2026, while discussing his exit from the Emirates under Mikel Arteta: "The truth is that things change fast in football."

Both themes now converge on Saturday, with Flick's demanding style set to be tested again as Barcelona host Getafe and Jesus pushing for minutes in a squad he says is defined by its unity.
