Gareth Southgate rules out Premier League return: 'I don't see a scenario where I do that'
Gareth Southgate has closed the door on a return to club management in the Premier League, insisting he cannot picture himself back in a dugout.
The former England manager, who has been out of work since resigning as Three Lions boss after Euro 2024, was asked directly whether he would consider managing in the English top flight again.
'I don't see a scenario where I do that'
"I don't see a scenario where I do that," the 56-year-old told The Amol Rajan Connection.
Southgate's final match in charge of England was the Euro 2024 final, which his side lost to Spain. He had also led the national team to the Euro 2020 final.
He has not managed at club level since a three-year spell with Middlesbrough that began in 2006, and he admitted that his relationship with the game had changed long before he stepped away.
"Towards the end of my time with England, I stopped enjoying, at the very least for a period, the wins keep you going," he said.
"By the end, I didn't even enjoy the wins for any longer than a couple of minutes. So, I've hardly watched football.
"I went to the FA Cup final to see my team, Crystal Palace, win their first trophy. I've not been to a football ground since. So my sort of desire to be involved in football has changed."
A different film
Since leaving the England role, Southgate has worked in the media and earlier this year fronted a BBC documentary in which he travelled across the UK to understand the challenges facing young men and boys. He has also spent time as a visiting lecturer at Harvard Business School in Boston.
"I've loved the last 18 months of my life," he added.
"I've had 37 years where my sense of self depended on did I win or lose on Saturday. And actually I've loved having different experiences. I've met politicians, I've met people in the media industry, I have learned about leadership in all sorts of areas, I've travelled around the world learning things.
"I've just enjoyed playing a different film in my life."
