PSG Retain Super Cup with Doue's Dramatic Goal

Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Super Cup title with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday evening, showcasing their competitive edge despite limited pre-season preparation. The match proved to be a thrilling affair, with Desire Doue emerging as the standout performer, scoring the decisive goal and providing the opening assist.

Doue's Historic Performance

Doue's contribution to PSG's triumph transcended just the winning goal. The French international recorded a goal and an assist in the same Super Cup match—a feat that hadn't been achieved since Luis Suarez accomplished it for Barcelona in 2015 against Sevilla. Moreover, Doue is only the second player to record multiple goal involvements in the Super Cup since Liverpool's Sadio Mane scored twice in 2019.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a composed finish, converting a pass from Doue. However, Aston Villa's 17-year-old sensation Brian Madjo drew the visitors level just before half-time, having spurned several earlier opportunities.

The turning point came just past the hour mark when Doue latched onto a through-ball from Ousmane Dembele and fired a left-footed finish into the far corner. Initially flagged for offside, a VAR review proved decisive—Matty Cash had dropped back sufficiently to keep Doue onside, and the goal stood.

Following the victory, Doue articulated PSG's grand ambitions for the campaign ahead. Speaking to Canal+, he declared: "The state of mind we have is to always win, to be as competitive as we can be. We are very happy. Coming back from vacation, we knew it wouldn't be easy, but we put things in place tonight. The goal, above all, is to win everything this year."

PSG's trophy cabinet is already bulging after a magnificent 2025-26 season in which they secured Ligue 1, the Champions League, the Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, and the Trophee des Champions, adding to five trophies won in the previous campaign.

Historic Achievement for PSG and Enrique

By retaining the Super Cup, PSG became only the fourth club to win the competition in consecutive years, joining Ajax (1973, 1974), AC Milan (1989, 1990), and Real Madrid (2016, 2017). Under Luis Enrique's stewardship, the Parisian side's European prestige continues to soar—Enrique is now only the third head coach to win the Super Cup three times, having previously triumphed with Barcelona in 2015 and PSG in 2025. Only Carlo Ancelotti (five titles) and Pep Guardiola (four titles) have won the competition more frequently.

Safonov Impresses in Goal

Goalkeeper Matvey Safonov delivered another commanding performance for the European champions, making three crucial saves to thwart Aston Villa's advances. Despite PSG's minimal pre-season preparations compared to their opponents, Safonov reflected: "It's just like usual. It's very good, at the beginning of the season, to have a title. We haven't trained much, but I think we've shown that we're ready for the season."
