Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Aston Villa – Desire Doue took centre stage with a goal and an assist as the Champions League holders clinched the Super Cup for the second season running, but not before 17-year-old Brian Madjo delivered a record-breaking scare for the French champions.

Doue was the provider for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's excellent opener in the 20th minute, but Villa – last season's Europa League winners – gave a spirited account of themselves throughout Wednesday's encounter in Salzburg. Madjo, who signed from Metz in January but could only register after winning an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last month, equalised on the stroke of half-time before Doue's composed 61st-minute finish inside the far post settled matters.

Madjo's record-breaking night

PSG were issued a stern test, primarily thanks to Madjo. The teenage striker led all players on the pitch for shots (six), big chances (four) and expected goals (0.98 xG), showing a knack for getting into goalscoring positions throughout. At 17 years and 212 days old, he became the youngest player ever to score in the Super Cup, surpassing Patrick Kluivert in 1996 (19 years, 220 days). He is also the youngest player to score for Villa in any competition since January 2021, when Louie Barry (17 years, 201 days) found the net against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

"These experiences and having days like today are very important. They showed how they are learning, after their hard work. This is the way," Unai Emery told TNT Sports.

While tracking back, Madjo had lost possession in the build-up to Kvaratskhelia's opener, and he atoned for that moment with a flurry of chances: nodding John McGinn's cross agonisingly wide, failing to get enough bend on a shot from the left side of the area, miscuing a close-range header and prodding into the side netting. His most difficult opportunity yet arrived in the 45th minute, when, falling at the far post under pressure from Willian Pacho, he brilliantly diverted McGinn's delivery into the roof of the net.

Emery hails Villa's young lions

Emery lavished praise upon both Madjo and fellow teenager George Hemmings, who started and impressed despite the defeat. Hemmings could have joined Madjo on the scoresheet when his effort was repelled by Matvey Safonov at 2-1, and the 19-year-old also won possession more often than any other Villa player (six). His 14 passes in the final third were the second-most for Villa, after Emiliano Buendia's 16.

Villa spent long periods on top even without Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martinez – granted additional leave after going deep at the World Cup – having 15 shots to PSG's 12 and winning the expected goals battle by 2.13 xG to 1.03.

"Overall, we can feel proud of everything we've done. Some changes will be needed, but we are confident. With a loss, you can never feel happy but how we competed, how the players responded on the field for 90 minutes... And with our chances to score, we must feel really very proud of what we have done today," Emery added.

Luis Enrique's place in history

Luis Enrique became only the third head coach to win the Super Cup on three occasions, having previously triumphed with Barcelona in 2015 (against Sevilla) and PSG last year (versus Tottenham). Only Carlo Ancelotti (five times) and Pep Guardiola (four) have won the competition more often.

PSG also joined an exclusive list of teams to win the trophy in back-to-back years, alongside Ajax (1973, 1974), AC Milan (1989, 1990) and Real Madrid (2016, 2017). Doue, meanwhile, became the first player to score and assist in the same Super Cup matchup since 2015, when Luis Suarez did so for Luis Enrique's Barcelona – against Unai Emery's Sevilla.

The match swung on Doue's second-half winner, which was initially chalked off before a VAR review found Matty Cash had played him onside. Nuno Mendes saw a long-range piledriver parried by Bizot before going down with cramp, while substitute Ousmane Dembele lashed a wild volley over the crossbar when presented with a chance to make the result safe. Emiliano Buendia passed up Villa's final opening as PSG held firm.

Villa now face Borussia Monchengladbach in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday, with their Premier League campaign beginning against Brighton eight days later. Emery expects Villa's remaining World Cup stars to return to training in the coming days: "They are joining us after this match; we have our last friendly on Saturday. They are not going to be there, but they will start training with us now. We wanted to give them a four-week holiday because the season was very demanding."
