Rogers rates start to Chelsea career '10 out of 10' as £117m record signing eyes place among world's best

Rogers rates start to Chelsea career '10 out of 10' as £117m record signing eyes elite status

Morgan Rogers has rated the start of his Chelsea career a full "10 out of 10" — even if the Blues' collective results have been rather more mixed since his British-record arrival.

Chelsea resume their Premier League campaign at home to Bournemouth on Saturday sitting 10th in the table. They won their first two league games under Xabi Alonso but went into the international break on a three-game winless run — a draw followed by two defeats, the most recent a 3-0 trouncing by Brentford.

Rogers' individual numbers, however, have been nothing short of excellent. The England midfielder has three goals and one assist in the Premier League this season following his £117m move from Aston Villa — a British record fee — and only Joao Pedro, with three goals and three assists, has more goal involvements for the Blues this campaign.

"10 – I've enjoyed it," Rogers told The Standard during the international break. "I'm feeling as good as I've ever felt. I'm playing, contributing, scoring goals, assists, creating chances, as good as I have ever done in my career. So why would it not be a 10?"

The midfielder said his decision to leave Villa Park was driven by a determination to be judged among the very best in the game.

"It was time for me to take that next step and I feel like I want to be seen as one of the best players in the Premier League, one of the best players in the world," Rogers said. "To do so, I needed to take that next step and start that next chapter."

And Rogers believes the weight of expectation at Stamford Bridge is exactly what he needs to fulfil his potential.

"I need to play with the best players in the world and compete with the best players in the world, and on that bigger stage, and I just feel Chelsea brings that different level of pressure of having to win and having to perform in each game," he said. "I think people will judge me on a higher pedestal because of what I'm delivering. I want to show what I'm about."

The numbers behind the '10 out of 10' start

The underlying data supports his self-assessment. Only Gonzalo Garcia (32) and Erling Haaland (27) have made more cross-option runs in the 2026-27 Premier League than Rogers' 20, while only Garcia (23), Bryan Mbeumo (21) and Matheus Cunha (18) have made more in-possession runs ending in a shot — a metric on which Rogers' 18 is level with Chelsea team-mate Cole Palmer.

His influence was on full display in last month's EFL Cup third-round thriller at Stamford Bridge, when Rogers laid on three assists as Chelsea overturned a 2-0 half-time deficit to beat Leeds United 6-3, with second-half substitute Palmer scoring twice (reported 10 September).

The size of the fee that brought Rogers to west London raised eyebrows at the time, but The Guardian's early-September verdict on the summer transfer window hailed the deal as Chelsea's coup, noting that Rogers had started well after joining for £117m and praising the club's sensible approach since turning to Alonso.

Next up is Saturday's meeting with winless Bournemouth, where Rogers will look to add to a goal-involvement tally bettered at the club this season only by Joao Pedro.
