Iraola confirms Liverpool will make more signings before transfer window closes

Iraola demands reinforcements before Liverpool opener

Andoni Iraola has confirmed that Liverpool will make further signings before the transfer window closes, admitting that his squad remains “quite thin” as he prepares for his first Premier League match in charge.

Liverpool have already completed permanent deals for Jeremy Jacquet and Víctor Munoz, while Ronald Araujo has arrived on loan from Barcelona. However, their business has been quieter than during the previous summer window, and Iraola wants additional options before the September 1 deadline.

“We'll definitely sign players, yes,” Iraola told Sky Sports in an interview with Jamie Carragher. “I hope more than one.”

The manager acknowledged that he would have preferred to have his complete squad available from the start of pre-season, but said the crucial assessment would come when the market closes. Liverpool have been linked with Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh, although reports that the club made a £50 million bid have not resulted in a deal.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler said that interest in successful players was a natural consequence of the club’s recent progress. “If the team is doing well, there's some good achievements, then the individual can shine and then of course there will be a big ask for players,” he said.

A demanding first test at Newcastle

Iraola’s first competitive match will come away to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. Liverpool have avoided defeat in their last nine Premier League visits to the ground, winning six and drawing three, and could match Manchester City’s competition record of 10 unbeaten away meetings with Newcastle.

The Reds are also unbeaten in their last 13 opening Premier League matches, but their away form last season was a concern: they lost nine league matches on the road, including four of their final five away games.

“This is Liverpool; they are not going to wait 10 games until this gets going,” Iraola said. “I want to think we are going to be probably not 100% on Sunday, but good enough to get results.”

The former Bournemouth manager said his players must learn to adjust during matches rather than wait for half-time. He also welcomed moments when players challenge the initial plan themselves, describing that as evidence that the team is beginning to understand his approach.
