Swansea lead wide-open Championship as record-breaking goal glut lights up the second tier

The Championship has reached its first international break of the 2026-27 season, and after a gruelling 37-day slog of eight matches it already feels like a campaign with no clear favourite. Just seven points separate the top 15 sides, with Wolves and Portsmouth holding a game in hand after their Carabao Cup clashes were postponed.

Swansea City lead the way on 17 points, with QPR, Stoke, Bristol City and Charlton in the chasing pack, while West Brom have swapped the bottom five last season for the top five this time around. As BBC Sport puts it, the table backs up the sense that this "could be a fascinating season with no stand-out team as yet".

A league where fast starts don't always help

The statistics underline just how open this division is. Since the Championship adopted its current name in 2004, only once has a team topped the table after eight matches with fewer than the 17 points the Swans have earned — Brighton in 2012, who ended up finishing fourth and losing in the play-offs.

"Six other sides have been in first place with 17 points before the Swans, but only two of those - Leeds in 2019-20 and Sheffield United in 2022-23 - won promotion."

And the omens for Swansea are far from perfect: of the other four sides previously top with 17 points, three did not even finish in the top 10.

Goals galore

Neutral fans are being treated to a genuine goal glut. There have been 277 goals in the Championship this season — 36 more than at the same stage last year, with one fewer match played, and the second most ever at this point since the 2004-05 rebrand.

The stats point to more direct play and quality on the flanks. Only once in the past nine seasons have more goals come from crosses than the 47 so far this campaign, while 44 of those 47 have been headers — the most at this stage by some distance over the past five seasons. Nine goals have come from throw-ins, the second most at this stage in 14 years, a reminder of how the game has evolved given that from 2013-14 to 2020-21 just 14 goals across eight seasons came from that route.

Bristol City's on-loan Crystal Palace full-back Rio Cardines already has six assists — the most by any player in Europe's top leagues — while Southampton's Dom Ballard may have produced the goal of the season with his back-heeled volley at Birmingham.

Promotion favourites pick up the pace

Pre-season favourites West Ham took a while to get going on their first Championship campaign in 14 years, taking just two points from their opening three games, including a shock home defeat to Charlton. But four straight wins, culminating in a 6-0 demolition of Wrexham, plus a battling 2-2 draw at Millwall, left them second behind Swansea.

The Hammers' 22 goals across their opening eight league games is the most in 93 years — and six of the past seven sides to score that many by this stage have gone on to win the title. Jarrod Bowen and Konstaninos Mavropanos have four goals apiece in a strong start, and with the talent on the field and the depth of the squad there is little to suggest West Ham will not make an immediate return to the top flight.

Wolves sit just three points off the top with their game against Portsmouth in hand. After a late salvage draw at home to Blackburn in the season opener and a 4-2 defeat at West Ham, Cesar Peixoto's overhauled side have taken seven points from their next three games, including the trip to Birmingham and the Black Country derby against West Brom. Given they won only three of 38 league games and earned just 20 points in total last season, four wins and 14 points from seven matches is a fine start for the new man.

Surprise packages

QPR have been the surprise of the campaign. After finishing last season with just two points from their final six matches, the Hoops boast the second-best defensive record in the division with only seven goals conceded in eight games, and their sole defeat came at home to Middlesbrough in a game they might well have claimed a point or more.

Converting chances remains their biggest issue: 261 touches in the opposition box and 55 corners won are both second most in the division, yet their shot conversion rate of 7.3% ranks 20th of the 24 teams.
