Mainoo returns from World Cup with Carrick’s backing

Michael Carrick believes Kobbie Mainoo can use his frustrating World Cup experience as motivation for a major season with Manchester United, despite the midfielder failing to make an appearance for England.

Mainoo was included in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man squad for the tournament in North America, where England finished third. England lost 2-1 to Argentina in the semi-final before beating France 6-4 in a chaotic third-place play-off. However, an injury prevented Mainoo from getting a final opportunity to take part, leaving him as one of only two squad members not to play.

Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson were preferred in midfield throughout the competition, while James Trafford was the other England player who did not feature. Mainoo has since returned to United training ahead of the club’s opening Premier League fixture of the 2026-27 season against Hull City on August 22.

‘To be there is a big step’

Carrick said he had remained in contact with Mainoo throughout the tournament and acknowledged the emotional difficulty of being part of a major event without playing.

“It was a good experience for Kobbie to go there and it’s a World Cup – to be there is a big step.”

He added that Mainoo had achieved a great deal at a young age, but understood why the lack of game time had been frustrating.

“It’s frustrating when you want to play and have an impact. If you’re not, that has its own challenges, but he’s come back, he’s been in great spirits this week, and it’s nice for him to be home and looking forward to the new season.”

Carrick declined to criticise Tuchel’s team selection, insisting that the priority was Mainoo’s mindset after returning to club football.

“The biggest thing for me is that Kobbie’s in a really good place. I think he feels that. He’s ready for a big season.”

United still seeking more additions

Mainoo faces increased competition for midfield places after United completed moves for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Karl Darlow has also arrived from Leeds United as cover for goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Carrick indicated that the club is not finished in the transfer market and believes further additions are necessary if United are to compete for honours.

“We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that.”

For Mainoo, the immediate challenge is to convert the lessons of a difficult tournament into consistent performances for United. Carrick’s assessment suggests the midfielder has returned encouraged rather than disheartened, with a fresh opportunity to establish himself during the new campaign.
