Premier League's new timewasting rules deliver results: ball-in-play time hits five-year high
After five matchdays of the 2026-27 Premier League season, Opta data shows the IFAB-backed five-second directives on throw-ins and goal-kicks, plus a 10-second substitution limit, have cut restart times and lifted ball-in-play share to 57.7% — the highest since 2020-21. Only a handful of players have been punished, but the broad effect on delays is clear across corners, free-kicks and penalties.
