Mercedes Dominate Early 2026 Season as Antonelli Sprints to Championship Lead
The 2026 Formula 1 season has undergone a dramatic shift in power after just four rounds, with Mercedes officially toppling McLaren to take command of the Teams' Championship. The Silver Arrows currently hold a commanding 180-point tally, establishing a 70-point lead over their closest rivals, Ferrari.
The Rise of Kimi Antonelli
Central to this success has been the sensational form of 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli. The Italian driver has become the sport's youngest-ever leader in the Drivers' Championship, securing three consecutive wins, including a triumphant performance at the Miami Grand Prix. Despite Mercedes not bringing the same level of upgrades to Miami as some of their competitors, Antonelli's skill ensured he extended his championship lead to 20 points.
Internal Rivalry: Russell vs. Antonelli
While Antonelli celebrates, teammate George Russell has faced a more challenging stretch, finishing off the podium in the last two races. Russell attributed his lack of pace in Miami to the low-grip, smooth track surface. However, Team Principal Toto Wolff remains steadfast in his support of the British driver.
"George is a killer. What makes him so good is he never stops fighting or attacking," Wolff told Sky Sports F1. "I have no doubt the two of them will fight for points throughout the season."
Russell himself has remained grounded regarding the title race, stating, "Clearly he [Antonelli] is in a very good place at the moment and momentum is with him... but I'm not even considering it [the championship]... I just want to get back onto the top step of the podium."
The Top Four Shuffle
The shake-up extends beyond Mercedes. Ferrari has climbed to second place, rewarding their strategic decision to prioritize 2026 preparations early in the previous year. Conversely, McLaren, the dominant force of 2025, has slipped to third with 94 points. Despite the drop, signs of recovery are appearing, with Lando Norris challenging for the lead in Miami and securing a Sprint victory.
Red Bull has seen the most significant decline among the top teams, dropping from third at the end of 2025 to fourth. After a difficult start that saw them as low as P6 after Japan, Max Verstappen suggested there is "light at the end of the tunnel" following a strong showing in Miami.
