Messi Praised for 'Contagious' Leadership After Miami Fight Back to Beat Orlando

Lionel Messi's magic lit up the Florida derby as Inter Miami completed a thrilling 4-2 comeback victory over Orlando City, with the Argentine superstar scoring twice to secure bragging rights in the heated rivalry. The win marked Miami's first MLS triumph of the 2026 season, following a demoralizing 3-0 loss to Los Angeles FC, and showcased the kind of resilience that defined their championship-winning campaign last year.

Messi's Mastery and Leadership Shine

Messi opened his 2026 MLS scoring account with a pair of clinical finishes, sandwiching his goals around a well-taken strike from Telasco Segovia. Mateo Silvetti had earlier reduced the deficit after Orlando surged to a 2-0 lead through Marco Pasalic and Martin Ojeda. Messi now has eight goals in just five career appearances against Orlando across all competitions, including braces in four of those matches—making the Florida club one of only 36 teams worldwide, and one of eight in MLS, that he has outscored in terms of goals versus games played.

Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano praised Messi's intangible impact, calling his leadership "contagious."

"Like I've said a thousand times, he is obviously the best player to ever play this sport. He's a leader," Mascherano said. "He is contagious for everyone. He inspires others, but he also often needs to be inspired himself."

Mascherano highlighted how Messi's drive created ripple effects across the team, especially when moving forward with attacking intent.

"When he was driving forward, he had more attacking options, and with so many opportunities, he clearly has the ability to create chances like no one else, and that's what allowed us to turn the game around,"

Statistical Dominance

Messi's influence extended beyond the scoresheet. He recorded 1.36 expected goals (xG) out of Miami's total 1.79, took eight shots—four more than any other player—and put four on target. He also led all players in chances created, contested 11 duels, and won six—tying with Braian Ojeda and Tadeo Allende for most duels won on the pitch.

Team Resilience After Halftime

Despite going 2-0 down, Miami showed remarkable character in the second half. Mascherano declined to take credit for the turnaround, instead lauding the players' heart and determination.

"The win is exclusively because of the players. The team played like champions in the second half. There were no tactics, nothing. There was heart, bravery with the ball, resilience, commitment. I think the team showed why they won [the MLS Cup] last year."

The victory not only lifted spirits after a disappointing midweek result but also reaffirmed Inter Miami's status as contenders in the Eastern Conference. With Messi leading by example—both through goals and leadership—the Herons appear poised for another deep run in 2026.
