President Trump Confirmed to Attend 2026 World Cup Final

White House Confirms Presidential Attendance

United States President Donald Trump is set to attend the 2026 World Cup final, as confirmed by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt during a briefing on Thursday. The President's presence is expected to culminate in his participation in the post-match trophy ceremony, aligning with traditions where heads of state from host countries participate in the festivities.

World Cup 2026 preparations and stadium atmosphere

According to Leavitt, President Trump will travel to New York City on Friday for a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in Manhattan before attending Sunday's final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had previously indicated that he and Trump would be "enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together."

A History of Host Participation

Trump's attendance follows a long-standing precedent. In the 2022 Qatar World Cup, the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, joined Infantino in presenting the trophy to Argentina captain Lionel Messi. Similarly, Vladimir Putin presented medals to French players during the 2018 final in Russia.

President Trump also participated in the post-match festivities of last summer's Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. That event was marked by a slight awkwardness when Trump remained on the podium during the trophy lift. Reece James, the captain of Chelsea at the time, recalled: "Before, they told me he was going to present the trophy, and then exit the stage... I think he wanted to stay."

Controversies and Tournament Absence

Despite the high profile of the 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, President Trump has not attended any of the first 102 matches. While cabinet members attended U.S. men's national team games, neither the President nor Vice President JD Vance appeared at any of the 76 matches held across 11 U.S. stadiums.

His most notable involvement occurred earlier this month when he called Infantino to request a review of American striker Folarin Balogun's red card suspension. FIFA's subsequent decision to overturn the suspension sparked the tournament's biggest controversy, though the U.S. was eliminated by Belgium the following day.

Despite these events, the White House maintains that the administration's behind-the-scenes work ensured a successful event. "His attendance will cap what has been the most-watched, most secure and most successful World Cup in American history," Leavitt stated, adding that it is a "fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America's ability to host the world on the grandest stage."
