Verstappen's Frustrating Silverstone: Crash, Qualifying Woes, and Red Bull's Response
A Double Whammy for Verstappen
Max Verstappen's British Grand Prix weekend ended in frustration as he faced a series of technical issues. The four-time World Champion crashed into the Stowe corner gravel trap four laps from the finish, an incident he described as "dangerous" due to the recurring rear wing failures. Team principal Laurent Mekies admitted Verstappen was "right not to be happy" with the situation.
Verstappen's frustration was compounded by his Qualifying performance, where he described a "double whammy" of poor car balance and low top speed. "When the rear wing doesn't close fully, you lose a lot of downforce and you spin off the track," he said after the race. Mekies confirmed the team had identified the issue from the Austrian Grand Prix but faced a different failure at Silverstone.
Red Bull's Response and Future Plans
Red Bull has been using an "upside-down" rear wing concept since Miami, but Mekies stated the team would "review the full area" to prevent future incidents. "We are going to leave zero chance for that to happen again," he emphasized. The team also debated whether Verstappen should drop out of parc ferme to reset his car, but Mekies argued staying in the race was the better strategy despite the handling issues.
Verstappen's teammate Isack Hadjar also struggled, finishing P5 in Qualifying but admitting the gap to Mercedes and Ferrari was significant. "We first have to fix our own problems," Verstappen said, highlighting the need for Red Bull to address their technical shortcomings.
