Yuvraj Singh Recalls Asking Teenage Jasprit Bumrah to Leave Nets During Cancer Recovery

Yuvraj Singh's Net Session Encounter with Teenage Jasprit Bumrah

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has shared a fascinating anecdote about his early encounter with a young Jasprit Bumrah, revealing that he once asked the teenage bowler to leave the nets because he was bowling "lethal" deliveries during Yuvraj's cancer recovery period.

Yuvraj Singh speaking about Jasprit Bumrah in interview

In an exclusive interview on the Overlap Cricket YouTube channel with Michael Vaughan, Yuvraj opened up about the 2013 incident when Bumrah was just 16 years old. The former cricketer was attempting to make a comeback to cricket after battling cancer, and the young Bumrah's pace proved too challenging during net sessions.

"I Want This Kid Out of the Nets"

"When I was trying to comeback and he was 16 years old, he was bowling rapid quick in the nets," Yuvraj recalled. "It was 2013 and I was like 'I want this kid out the nets, Stop bowling to me' because I was just recovering from Cancer and I was trying to get back to cricket."

Yuvraj added with a laugh, "And this guy was just bowling lethal. I was like 'Kid Stop Whoever You Are'."

Bumrah's Early Bowling Characteristics

The former all-rounder also spoke about Bumrah's unique bowling action and natural pace that made him difficult to face even at such a young age. "I mean he definitely had a long run up and he was... I don't think he had much skills back then, but he was quick, he was extremely quick and with his action, you know, he got this deceptive bounce. It just keeps getting on your ribs all the time," Yuvraj explained.

From Net Session Nuisance to World-Class Bowler

Since those early days, Jasprit Bumrah has transformed into one of the finest all-format fast bowlers in modern cricket. His statistics across formats speak volumes about his consistency and impact:

  • Tests: Approximately 234 wickets at an exceptional average of about 20
  • ODIs: 149 wickets with an economy rate under 5
  • T20Is: 121 wickets while maintaining an elite economy of around 6.5-7
  • IPL: 183 wickets for Mumbai Indians

Known for his pinpoint accuracy, deadly yorkers, and calm demeanor under pressure, Bumrah's journey from being a teenager who was "too quick" for a recovering Yuvraj Singh to becoming India's premier fast bowler showcases his remarkable development.

Yuvraj's candid revelation offers a unique perspective on Bumrah's early potential and serves as a testament to how the young bowler's raw talent was evident even before he became an international sensation.
