Sri Lanka Beat England by 16 Runs at Headingley to Level ODI Series Despite Buttler Heroics

Sri Lanka held their nerve in a thrilling finish at Headingley to defeat England by 16 runs in the second One-Day International, successfully defending 321 for 6 and sending the three-match series into a decider at The Oval.

Kusal Mendis Sets the Platform with Superb Century

Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka overcame a cautious start to post an imposing total of 321 for 6. After Pathum Nissanka was trapped leg-before by Gus Atkinson for 25 inside the first Powerplay, Kusal Mendis joined Kamindu Mendis to construct a match-defining 137-run partnership for the second wicket.

Kamindu reached a fluent 54 before lofting Atkinson to Harry Brook at mid-on. Kusal Mendis pressed on, overturning a caught-behind decision on 99 before bringing up a magnificent century with a boundary off Jamie Overton in the 31st over. In doing so, he became the first Sri Lankan batter to score an ODI hundred in England since Angelo Mathews at the 2019 World Cup.

Following Kusal's dismissal for 121 off Rehan Ahmed, Pavan Rathnayake injected vital late momentum, striking 48 off just 38 deliveries. Supported by Janith Liyanage, Rathnayake helped Sri Lanka plunder 84 runs from the final 10 overs to push their total beyond 320.

Wellalage Triggers Collapse After Flying Start

England's chase began in explosive fashion as openers Tom Banton (73) and Ben Duckett (67) punished Sri Lanka's new-ball attack. The pair put together 143 runs in under 20 overs, dealing heavily in boundaries across the Powerplay.

However, left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage turned the contest dramatically on its head with a devastating spell. Wellalage bowled Duckett, had Banton stumped in his subsequent over, and trapped England captain Harry Brook lbw to send the hosts tumbling from 143 for 0 to 157 for 3.

Buttler Injury Halts England's Charge

Jos Buttler mounted a fierce counter-attack, smashing five sixes and passing 10,000 career runs in men's white-ball internationals on his way to a 36-ball half-century. Alongside Will Jacks (52), Buttler seemed to have England cruising toward victory, needing just 68 from the final 75 deliveries.

Disaster struck England in the 38th over when Buttler pulled up with a hamstring injury and was forced to retire hurt on 67. Sri Lanka capitalized immediately, tightening the screws with reverse swing and disciplined seam bowling from Eshan Malinga and Dilshan Madushanka.

Rehan Ahmed fell for a duck, while Atkinson and Overton were dismissed in quick succession. A visibly hobbled Buttler returned to bat with 27 needed off 14 deliveries, but Malinga dismissed Jacks in the penultimate over, conceding just a single run.

Needing 19 off the final over, Buttler attempted a leg-side heave off Madushanka but was caught in the deep, sealing a 16-run victory for Sri Lanka as England finished on 305 for 9.

The three-match ODI series will conclude in a winner-takes-all decider at The Oval on Sunday.
