BCB Extends Mehidy's ODI Captaincy to 2027, Litton to Lead T20Is Till 2028
Bangladesh Cricket Board Announces Long-Term Leadership Stability
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has solidified its leadership structure by announcing long-term captaincy appointments across formats during a board meeting at Sher-e Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday (April 4).
Mehidy Hasan Miraz to Lead ODIs Until 2027
All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz will continue as Bangladesh's ODI captain until 2027, with the board extending his tenure to provide stability ahead of major tournaments. Miraz has been leading the ODI side for approximately a year and will now have the opportunity to build a cohesive unit with a long-term vision.
Litton Das Confirmed as T20I Captain Through 2028
Wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das has been rewarded for his leadership over the past year with confirmation that he will lead Bangladesh's T20I side through to the 2028 T20 World Cup. The decision ensures continuity in the shortest format as the team builds toward the next global tournament.
BCB Cricket Operations Chairman Nazmul Abedeen Fahim explained the rationale behind the long-term appointments: "Since our T20 captain's tenure ended with the 2026 T20 World Cup, the current T20 captain and vice-captain will continue until the next T20 World Cup in 2028. At the same time, our ODI captain's tenure is also nearing its end. So, we feel it is very important that the captains can work uninterrupted and follow a long-term vision."
Regarding Miraz's appointment, Fahim added: "Mehidy Hasan Miraz has already been leading the team for about a year, and with the World Cup approaching, we thought that giving him this opportunity would allow him to organise and strengthen the team even better. In my view, Miraz has been doing well and has performed strongly for the team."
Coaching and Administrative Changes
The BCB also made significant moves to strengthen its coaching setup, appointing former left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique as a spin-bowling consultant on a one-year contract. Fahim emphasized the need for specialized spin coaching in Bangladesh: "To be honest, if we do the math, we have about eight to ten pace-bowling coaches. But when we look back, we cannot even find three spin-bowling coaches in the country. That is very alarming. We need to develop our own spin coaches. Rafique is almost a ready-made person who can serve this purpose immediately."
The board approved the newly elected selection panel headed by former captain Habibul Bashar Sumon and began work on a new HR policy. Other decisions included discussing a pension scheme for umpires and players, reintroducing an awards night for players, exploring overseas scholarship opportunities for sports journalists, and planning to publish a sports journal every three months.
