Sussex hammer relegated Hampshire to seal third place in Division One
Sussex finish season with a flourish: Hampshire hammered to seal third place
Sussex walloped Hampshire in the final round of the County Championship to finish third in Division One — and but for their 12-point penalty, they would have finished second. It was, by any measure, a magnificent achievement by the players in a season that had promised so little.
Things did not start well for Sussex, who slumped to seven wickets down with only 124 on the board, but Jack Leaning and Jack Carson fashioned a stand of 75 for the eighth wicket to guide their side to 244 — firmly in the "could have been a lot worse" category.
Jaydev Unadkat then got things going with a five-wicket haul, and the relegated hosts — no doubt eager for the season to simply end — conceded a lead of 116. Tom Haines helped himself to a century, and despite a creditable fight from Hampshire, Sussex clinched the win and third place in the table.
It was a super end to a campaign that had appeared destined for mediocrity, and a fitting way for Sussex's late-season surge to conclude. For Hampshire, by contrast, the final day merely formalised a fall already confirmed last week: their relegation to Division Two — the first since 2014 — was settled before this match began, leaving only pride to play for in their final fixture of the summer.
