South Africa and Australia Turn to Durban Test as World's Top Two Sides Meet on October 9

From White Ball to Red Ball

The one-day series may be over, but the meat of the contest between South Africa and Australia is only just beginning. The two sides, the finalists from the previous World Test Championship cycle and the teams currently sitting first and second in the Test rankings, now turn their attention to a much-anticipated three-match red-ball series.

The first Test will be played in Durban, starting Friday, October 9, with the first ball scheduled to be bowled at 7.30 am GMT.

Australia's Momentum

Mitchell Marsh's side heads into the Tests with some much-needed momentum after a 45-run DLS win in the rain-hit third ODI at Potchefstroom, a result that denied the Proteas a clean sweep. The Australians had also had a productive workout earlier in the tour, having played in Zimbabwe before arriving in South Africa — two of the three host nations for next year's World Cup.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who top-scored with 74 in the final ODI, said the tourists have a warm-up fixture lined up before the series opener. "They have a tour match before the 1st Test, and he is looking forward to it," he said.

South Africa's Home Challenge

For South Africa, the ODI series offered a valuable audition for several fringe players, with a number of regulars missing through injury. Captain Temba Bavuma collected the series trophy after the third ODI and will now lead his side into a Test challenge against the world's No. 1-ranked team on home soil.

Marsh was quick to acknowledge the difficulty of the task facing his side. "South Africa are a class side, especially at home," he said, reflecting on a gruelling white-ball leg.

What's at Stake

With both teams among the elite of the Test game — and each having recently contested a World Test Championship final — the series carries significant ranking implications. The focus now shifts entirely to Durban, where the first of three Tests gets underway on October 9.
