Cunha says overcoming difficult start at Man Utd led to World Cup spot
Matheus Cunha's World Cup Inclusion
Matheus Cunha has credited his resilience in overcoming a difficult start at Manchester United for securing his place in Brazil's 26-man World Cup squad. The 27-year-old forward, who was overlooked for the 2022 tournament, has now been selected by coach Carlo Ancelotti for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Overcoming Early Challenges
Cunha's journey at Manchester United was not without its struggles. He had to wait until October 25 to score his first goal for the club, and he missed the decisive penalty in their EFL Cup exit to Grimsby Town. However, since then, he has played a pivotal role in helping Michael Carrick's side qualify for the Champions League.
Impressive Debut Season
Cunha has become the third South American player to reach double-digit goal involvements in his debut Premier League season for United, following in the footsteps of Carlos Tevez (2007-08) and Edinson Cavani (2020-21). He recorded 12 goal involvements in all competitions, placing him among the top performers for the club alongside Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Bruno Fernandes.
Cunha's Reflections
"In football, just as in life, it's part of the process to go through difficult times and overcome them," Cunha said. "After everything I've been through, to have my name on the list, to arrive [to international duty] on my birthday – well, we'll see, won't we? I think it's fate."
Cunha emphasized the importance of overcoming challenges in his career, noting that it is the "greatest secret" to his success. He expressed pride in his journey and satisfaction in making it to the Brazil squad for the first time in 2024.
Looking Ahead to the World Cup
Cunha will have the opportunity to impress Ancelotti and the coaching staff in the run-up to the World Cup, with Brazil facing friendlies against Panama and Egypt before their opening Group C match against Morocco. He is hopeful of a successful tournament and is eager to contribute in the roles he is most comfortable in.
"It's a pleasure to work with the best people whose experience can be passed on to you, helping with something so huge," Cunha added. "These people, with so much experience and such a wealth of knowledge in football, are essential at times like this. They're here with us so that we can achieve our goals together."
Cunha, who has one goal in 21 appearances for Brazil, aims to be fully involved in the World Cup campaign and is committed to giving his best for the team.
