Former Arsenal Star Aaron Ramsey Inspired by Mikel Arteta to Pursue Management Career
Aaron Ramsey, the former Arsenal and Wales midfielder, has revealed that he is looking to follow in the footsteps of his old teammate Mikel Arteta by pursuing a career in football management.
Ramsey, who played alongside Arteta at the Emirates Stadium between 2011 and 2016, cited the Spaniard's trajectory as a primary motivation. Arteta recently led Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years, a feat that Ramsey finds deeply motivating.
"It is inspiring because Mikel was here [studying] around 10 years ago, in the same position starting his journey," Ramsey stated. "That's inspiring for us, to see him 10 years later, lifting the Premier League and in the Champions League final."
A Transition Into Coaching
Having already begun his studies for a pro licence, Ramsey is determined to reach the pinnacle of the game from the touchline. "I want to win all the big things in the game. That's the goal, that's the target – to get as good as I can to make that a reality," he added.
Ramsey's transition comes after a playing career that concluded earlier this year following the mutual termination of his contract with Pumas UNAM in October 2025. He also gained a brief taste of leadership as the interim boss of Cardiff City at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, though the stint ended without a win as the Bluebirds were relegated.
Looking Ahead
After a period of rest since his last professional appearance in September, Ramsey is eager to re-enter the footballing world, emphasizing that he is not built for retirement.
"It's not in my DNA to just put my feet up," Ramsey explained. "I feel ready, but that all depends on the opportunity, doesn't it? ... For me, I feel ready to coach, to manage, to be inspiring to a group of players, and we'll see what comes up."
