KS Ravikumar Reveals Why Rajinikanth Rejected 'Padayappa 2' Story: 'We Would Have to Think Much More Deeply'
Rajinikanth's 1999 blockbuster Padayappa still holds a treasured place in Tamil cinema, and fans have long hoped to see the superstar return as the film's iconic protagonist. A sequel was once discussed, but it never moved forward — and now director KS Ravikumar has explained exactly why Rajinikanth decided against the story he had developed.
Rajinikanth Felt 'Padayappa 2' Needed a Stronger Screenplay
Speaking at a recent event hosted by Behindwoods, KS Ravikumar revealed that he had spent around 15 days developing the story for Padayappa 2 before narrating it to Rajinikanth. According to the director, the superstar felt the screenplay needed further work to meet the expectations of today's audience.
Explaining Rajinikanth's response, Ravikumar said, “He told me that the screenplay we had worked on was not enough. If we were to make Padayappa 2, we would have to think much more deeply and develop a stronger screenplay to impress today's audience.”
The project was eventually put aside as Rajinikanth moved on to other film commitments.
Neelambari's Spirit Was Part of KS Ravikumar's Sequel Idea
The director revealed that his proposed story revolved around Neelambari returning as a spirit after her death in the first film. He had envisioned a supernatural storyline that would bring the character — the memorable antagonist played by Ramya Krishnan in the original — back into Padayappa's world.
However, Rajinikanth reportedly felt that the sequel needed a more compelling screenplay rather than relying solely on the popularity of the original.
Directed by Ravikumar, the 1999 film became a major hit and remains one of the most celebrated collaborations between the filmmaker and the superstar. Its enduring popularity has kept hopes for a sequel alive among fans.
Rajinikanth Chose 'Jailer 2' After Considering Other Sequels
Rajinikanth had previously revealed at the Jailer 2 event that he had heard sequel ideas for films such as Baashha, Petta and Padayappa before choosing Nelson Dilipkumar's story for Jailer 2. The actor said Nelson's narration appealed to him, prompting him to approve the project.
Jailer 2, which brings back Tiger Muthuvel Pandian and pairs Rajinikanth with director Nelson Dilipkumar and composer Anirudh Ravichander, has been positioned as a theatrical experience for fans of the franchise. In prior coverage dated 14 October 2026, Times of India outlined five reasons to watch the sequel on the big screen, citing the superstar's return, Nelson's dark comedy-action mix, Anirudh Ravichander's music, a star-studded ensemble and the prospect of surprise cameos.
Ravikumar and Rajinikanth's Long Collaboration
Ravikumar and Rajinikanth have previously worked together on films including Muthu, Padayappa and Lingaa. While Padayappa 2 remains unrealised, Ravikumar's latest comments offer a glimpse into why the team chose not to rush a sequel to a film that audiences continue to celebrate.
