Rajat Patidar's Six-Hitting Masterclass Propels RCB in Qualifier 1

A Statement of Intent

On the eve of the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 against the Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar made a bold claim: he wanted to dispel the perception that he is primarily a spinner-beater, asserting that his game is actually better suited for fast bowlers. In a stunning display of power hitting at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, Patidar did exactly that.

Patidar's statistics for the season already hinted at this preference, with 27 of his 41 sixes coming against pacers. However, his performance on Tuesday evening was a masterclass in aggression and timing, as he hammered 93 runs off just 33 deliveries.

The Anatomy of an Innings

The knock didn't start with immediate fireworks. With RCB losing key batters Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli in quick succession, Patidar initially played a measured game of accumulation. The turning point arrived in the 11th over when he pulled a short delivery from Jason Holder deep into the stands, bringing up RCB's hundred and shifting the momentum.

Despite a few moments of fortune—including a dropped catch by Kagiso Rabada and a leading edge that flew over the keeper—Patidar remained unfazed. He eventually accelerated into a ferocious assault, notably collecting 28 runs in a single over against Kulwant Khejroliya in the 15th over.

Dominating the World's Best

Patidar's brilliance wasn't limited to the medium pacers. Even the formidable Rashid Khan was targeted, with Patidar hitting a magnificent inside-out six over cover. He reached his half-century in just 21 balls, punctuated by a brutal pull and a stunning back-foot drive over cover against Rabada.

"I have dominated the fast bowlers more this year. There is a perception about me that I play spinners better. But if someone asks me, I always say that I prefer fast bowlers."

The innings culminated in a final-over onslaught against Prasidh Krishna, where Patidar launched a full toss over backward square leg and smashed another straight back over the bowler to finish in the nineties. His 93 was not just a high score, but a fearless exhibition of batting that fundamentally changed the pace of the contest.
