Sepang Returns to the 2026 F1 Calendar as Malaysia Hosts Bahrain Grand Prix
Sepang set for a 2026 Formula 1 return
Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit will host the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix on 4 October, with practice sessions scheduled for 2 October, final practice and qualifying on 3 October, and the race following on Sunday.

A modern classic
The 5.543-kilometre circuit was designed by Hermann Tilke and built during Malaysia’s rapid development in the 1990s. Construction began in 1997, and the venue officially opened in 1999 as the country prepared to welcome Formula 1.
Sepang’s first Grand Prix was held in 1999. Ferrari dominated that opening event, with Eddie Irvine taking victory after Michael Schumacher returned from injury to support his team-mate’s championship challenge.
Built for overtaking and changing conditions
The circuit features 56 laps, a race distance of 310.398 kilometres and a layout that combines long straights, heavy-braking zones and fast, flowing corners. Its broad track allows drivers to use multiple racing lines, creating opportunities for overtaking and wheel-to-wheel battles.
Weather is another defining feature. Sepang’s heat and humidity can place a severe physical demand on drivers, while sudden tropical downpours can rapidly transform the race. The long sweep through Turns 5 and 6 and the final hairpin at Turn 15 are among the venue’s most distinctive sections.
The circuit record is a 1:34.080 lap set by Sebastian Vettel in 2017.
Where spectators can watch
The Main Grandstand offers views of the pit straight, the final corner and the opening sequence of turns, while its palm-inspired canopy provides shade. Grandstands near the final hairpin are especially well placed for watching late-braking overtakes before cars accelerate onto the main straight.
Located close to Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Sepang also gives fans convenient access to Malaysia’s food, culture and capital city. With its wide track, open sightlines and unpredictable weather, the venue is positioned to deliver a memorable 2026 race weekend.
