David Warner Arrested for Drunk-Driving in Australia
Former Australian cricket star David Warner has been arrested for drunk-driving in Sydney, Australia, following a traffic stop that revealed his blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit. According to New South Wales Police, the incident occurred on Sunday, April 5, 2026, around 5:30 PM local time on Malabar Road in Maroubra.
Police were conducting random breath testing when a van was seen stopping short of the checkpoint and parking nearby. Officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command approached the vehicle and administered a roadside test to the driver—identified as a 39-year-old man, later confirmed to be Warner. The initial test returned a positive result for alcohol, leading to his arrest.
At Maroubra Police Station, a second test allegedly recorded Warner's blood alcohol concentration at 0.104, significantly exceeding Australia’s legal limit of 0.05. As a result, he was charged with driving under the influence with a middle-range PCA (Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol). Warner was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice and is scheduled to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
"About 5:30pm today, police were conducting stationary random breath testing on Malabar Road, Maroubra," the official police statement read. "A van was seen to allegedly stop short of the testing site and park. Officers... approached the vehicle and subjected the driver... to roadside testing which returned a positive result. He was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station where a second test allegedly returned a reading of 0.104."
The 39-year-old, who recently retired from international cricket, last played against India in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. His international career concluded after stepping down from Test cricket in January 2024 and retiring from One Day Internationals following the 2023 ICC Men's ODI World Cup. Warner is currently serving as captain of Karachi Kings in the ongoing Pakistan Super League.
The incident has sparked widespread attention across global sports media, raising questions about the conduct of high-profile athletes off the field. No official statement has yet been issued by Warner or his representatives.
