Parthiv Patel Opts Out as BCCI Chief Selector Race Stalls, Pragyan Ojha Set to Stay On as Interim Chairman

Parthiv Patel's Withdrawal Leaves Selection Panel in Limbo

The composition of the BCCI's national selection committee remains clouded in uncertainty after former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, widely tipped to succeed Ajit Agarkar as chief selector, declined to apply for the job. The deadline for applications to fill the West Zone vacancy passed on Wednesday, with no marquee candidate stepping forward.

The deadline closed against the backdrop of Agarkar's decision not to continue in the role, a move first signalled when the BCCI's 95th AGM in Mumbai authorised its office-bearers to determine the future of the men's senior selection committee headed by the former India all-rounder.

Pragyan Ojha, who is set to continue as interim chairman of the BCCI selection committee

VVS Laxman's Growing Influence at the Centre of Excellence

Parthiv's decision to opt out has fuelled speculation that VVS Laxman, who heads the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE), may enjoy a greater say in selection affairs, with Pragyan Ojha continuing as the interim chairman of the selection committee.

With the ODI World Cup less than a year away, the board is weighing whether to simply leave the existing arrangement in place.

"BCCI would have preferred continuity with Agarkar staying on till the World Cup, but things didn't go as expected. If a new chairman of selection committee comes in, there's a chance his vision could be different from the ones working now. So, the board will have to gauge the vision of the new selector," a BCCI source said, adding, "With Laxman's growing influence, the board may let things remain the way they are at present."

It remains to be seen whether the board takes more time to identify a suitable candidate for the chief selector's role, or proceeds simply to fill the West Zone representative's spot.

BCCI Opens the Purse Strings to Woo Big Names

According to sources, the BCCI prefers high-profile candidates with a considerable amount of international cricket behind them for important positions, and the board has become flexible in its pay policy to lure such figures.

Since RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha joined the selection committee in September last year, the BCCI's spending on selection committees has exceeded the annual budget by Rs 3 crore, reaching Rs 17.45 crore. The board has now reserved Rs 19.35 crore for 2026-27, an increase of a further Rs 2 crore — effectively lifting the budget for selection committees by Rs 5 crore in total.

TOI understands that the board reached out to a couple of former cricketers who played close to 100 Tests, but they declined the offer. Recent appointments to the men's selection committee are said to have been made with candidates negotiating their salaries.

SS Das's Future Also Under Review

The BCCI must also deliberate on whether to retain SS Das as a selector, as he completes four years in the job in December. Sources indicated there is a chance the board will allow Das to continue until the World Cup.

The decision-making vacuum comes with India's selectors facing a busy calendar, with squads needed for the New Zealand tour and the home season ahead, before attention turns fully to the ODI World Cup.
