Senegal Still Waiting on Cas Verdict in Fight to Reclaim 2025 Afcon Crown

A final decided twice

Senegal are still waiting to hear the result of an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) after being stripped of the Africa Cup of Nations title they thought they had won in January.

The dispute dates back to the 2025 Afcon final, when Senegal celebrated what appeared to be a 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco. The Confederation of African Football subsequently awarded the title to Morocco, a decision Senegal have taken to sport's highest court in an attempt to have the crown restored.

Africa Cup of Nations

No swift resolution expected

As reported on 9 October 2026, the Court of Arbitration for Sport was set to hear Senegal's appeal against Caf's decision, but a hearing was not expected to produce an immediate ruling. The Cas code allows up to four months for an appeal verdict, meaning the outcome could still be weeks or months away.

That delay has left the 2025 title unresolved almost a year after the final, with both Senegal and Morocco waiting on a definitive answer.

A continent moving on

The uncertainty has not stopped the rest of Africa from looking ahead. As reported on 23 September 2026, the road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations began with a raft of high-profile managerial changes, including Patrick Vieira's first international job with Senegal and Herve Renard's return to the Ivory Coast dugout, as 48 nations started the extended qualifying window.

With the 2027 finals due to be staged in East Africa, Senegal's immediate focus is split between securing their place at the next tournament and the long-running battle to have the 2025 result overturned.
