Martin O'Neill Faces Three-Game Test of Celtic Future — and Can't Survive a Second Resignation Threat

A three-game audition for O'Neill

Martin O'Neill faces a three-game test of his future as Celtic manager, with the Northern Irishman set to come up against three notably younger opposing bosses.

According to the Daily Record, O'Neill will face Alfred Johansson's Motherwell, Wouter Vrancken's Heart of Midlothian and Marink Reedijk's Hibernian in the coming fixtures. The report notes that Johansson and Reedijk's ages put together still do not add up to O'Neill's 74 years, while Vrancken is his junior by three decades.

No room for another resignation threat

The Scottish Sun adds a sharper warning: O'Neill cannot afford to threaten to resign as Celtic manager for a second time and survive.

As of 1 October 2026, Celtic had stayed silent over O'Neill's future, with the club's continued refusal to publicly back their manager examined on BBC Radio Scotland's Scottish Football Podcast.

The bigger picture

The sequence of fixtures against Motherwell, Hearts and Hibernian now stands as a decisive stretch for O'Neill, whose position at Celtic Park is under mounting scrutiny.
