Fielding Lapses Cost Gujarat Titans as KKR Dominates at Eden Gardens
The Gujarat Titans' impressive five-match winning streak came to an abrupt halt at Eden Gardens, falling short by 29 runs in a high-scoring encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The match was defined by a series of costly fielding errors that allowed KKR to post a formidable total.
Catching as the Deciding Factor
Speaking after the match, Gujarat Titans assistant coach Parthiv Patel highlighted the disparity in fielding as the primary reason for the loss. He emphasized that in games featuring quality batters and high scores, opportunities are rare and must be seized.
"I think catching is something which obviously made a huge difference," Patel stated. "So when you are playing high-scoring games, when you are playing against quality batters, you don't get many opportunities. As soon as you get that opportunity, you have to make sure you catch the balls. And I thought that was the difference."
Costly Mistakes
The impact of the dropped catches was evident in the final scores of three key KKR batters. Finn Allen, who was dropped by Mohammed Siraj at long-on while on 33, went on to smash a brilliant 93 off just 35 balls. Cameron Green was dropped by Arshad Khan on 23—with the ball even going for four—and finished with an unbeaten 52 off 28 deliveries. Similarly, Angkrish Raghuvanshi was dropped by Washington Sundar on 53, eventually scoring 82*.
By the time KKR reached 247/2, the path to victory for GT, which was crucial for their qualification hopes, appeared nearly impossible.
Finn Allen's Masterclass
Despite the loss, Patel praised the resilience and skill of Finn Allen, particularly his ability to handle a potent new-ball attack consisting of established fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and KG Rabada.
"He played a very good innings, there is no doubt about it. We thought that it was not an easy pitch. And the quality and pace attack that we have... these are established fast bowlers. So he played a very good game against them," Patel added.
Allen admitted that the start was "tricky" due to the caliber of the opposing bowlers. He explained that his strategy was to maintain intent and take responsibility after the dismissal of captain Ajinkya Rahane.
"I just had a plan of, you know, just hit what I got. And if I didn't get the ball I wanted, just try and get off strike or just not get out, really," Allen remarked. "Especially once Jinx got out, I knew I had to take a bit of responsibility."
