Smith concedes edge despite RTS showing no contact

Australia were bowled out for 198 on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, with Steve Smith’s 71 off 109 balls helping them get close to 200 after the rest of the batting order struggled.

Smith, however, could have been dismissed for seven if not for a Real Time Snicko decision that did not appear to detect an edge.

Bangladesh fast bowler Ebadot Hossain made a confident appeal for a catch behind after Smith appeared ready to leave the field. On-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena rejected the appeal before the decision was referred for review. RTS did not show an edge, allowing Smith to continue his innings.

"Technology saved me today, I guess"

Speaking to the media after the day’s play, Smith was asked whether he had nicked the ball.

“I think so, yeah," said Smith.

When asked whether he was fortunate to survive, Smith replied: “I was lucky? Yeah, it seems that way. You got to take it sometimes."

Smith was then asked whether the incident had affected his trust in the technology.

“Normally it’s pretty good. Maybe I didn’t nick it. I don’t know, but I certainly felt something. If I’d been given out, I was going to walk off. But, yeah, technology saved me today, I guess," Smith said.

Day one summary

Smith’s innings included seven fours and a six, while Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud took 6/55 from 17 overs. Australia opener Jake Weatherald scored 23, the second-highest score in the innings, as the rest of the batting order failed to make a major contribution.

Bangladesh finished the day on 96/1 from 24 overs, reducing their first-innings deficit to 102 runs.
