Kolkata Police investigate threats against Sourav Ganguly and wife

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has approached Kolkata Police after receiving several threatening letters, including two delivered to his office on Monday that allegedly threatened to kill him and his wife, Dona Ganguly, and harm people close to them.

Ganguly, who is currently president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, filed a written complaint at Thakurpukur Police Station in south Kolkata. The complaint was submitted by his manager after the letters arrived at Ganguly's office.

Threatening letters reportedly sent over six months

According to the complaint, letters addressed in Ganguly's name had allegedly been arriving for around six months. They were initially not considered serious, but the latest correspondence contained explicit threats against Ganguly and Dona Ganguly.

A senior police officer said investigators were treating the matter seriously. We are taking the complaint seriously and have begun an investigation. We are examining the letters, their source and the courier trail to identify the person responsible, the officer said.

Police trace courier and mobile number

Preliminary findings indicate that the letters may have been sent through a courier service by someone from Belgharia in North 24 Parganas district. Police have contacted the courier agency to obtain consignment details and are examining the movement of a SIM card allegedly linked to the sender.

We have spoken to the people from the courier service and tracked down one mobile number. We are trying to spot it, the officer said.

Investigators are also checking whether all the letters came from the same person and are working to establish the motive behind the alleged threats. The contents of the letters, their origin and the courier trail are being examined as the probe continues.
