Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper Abhishek Porel arrested in rape case
Abhishek Porel arrested after complaint by medical student
Bengal cricketer and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel has been arrested by police in Hooghly in connection with a case filed by a medical student. The complainant has alleged that Porel established a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage.
Police said Porel was taken into custody by Mogra police, questioned and formally arrested. He underwent a medical examination and was produced before the Chinsurah Court. Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh said, “There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today.”
Allegations and High Court intervention
The woman filed her complaint at Mogra Police Station on June 23. According to the complaint, she had been in a relationship with Porel for about three-and-a-half years and the two had discussed marriage with their families. The allegations also include criminal intimidation and the recording of intimate moments.
The case came weeks after the Calcutta High Court directed Bengal Police to continue efforts to arrest Porel and another accused. In an order dated July 14, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya also directed the seizure of electronic devices linked to alleged private material. Police told the court that a pen drive had been seized and sent for forensic examination.
The complainant had approached the High Court alleging police inaction and claiming that Porel had threatened to make private photographs public. She has also alleged that she was assaulted and confined during an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026, and later required medical attention.
These are allegations contained in the complaint and have not been established in court. Porel remains an accused, and any determination of guilt will be made through the judicial process. Porel has previously denied the allegations and indicated that he would respond in detail after the police inquiry.
