Damon Hill reflects on tumultuous 1996 Formula 1 title triumph with Williams

Thirty years on from his crowning glory in Formula 1, Damon Hill's journey to the 1996 World Championship remains one of motorsport's most dramatic narratives of perseverance, triumph, and unexpected turbulence.

Hill’s path to the summit was forged through immense emotional and sporting pressure. Having joined Williams alongside legends Alain Prost in 1993 and Ayrton Senna in 1994, Hill found himself unexpectedly thrust into the role of team leader during two of the most emotionally fraught seasons in Grand Prix history, followed by a deeply challenging 1995 campaign.

Heading into 1996, conditions appeared primed for the British driver to seize his moment. Armed with the dominant Adrian Newey-designed Williams FW18, Hill entered the campaign with the experience and pace required to capture the title, even as he navigated fierce competition and the extraordinary shock of learning mid-season that Williams would not retain him for the following year.

Despite the immense off-track tumult and pressure from rookie teammate Jacques Villeneuve, Hill delivered a commanding campaign, sealing the world title at the season finale in Suzuka to etch his name into the history books alongside his late father, Graham Hill.
