COTA expects another attendance surge in Austin

Circuit of the Americas is preparing for a record-breaking United States Grand Prix weekend in October, according to chairman and co-founder Bobby Epstein. The Austin venue has become one of Formula 1’s largest events after once appearing at risk of falling off the calendar.

Last year’s race weekend drew more than 400,000 people, placing the United States Grand Prix behind only the British and Australian rounds in attendance. Epstein said current demand suggests that total could be surpassed.

“We’re actually on pace for a record year,” Epstein told reporters. “(We’re) seeing massive demand, and could easily break our record, our prior year record.”

Road access is central to the expansion

Epstein said the circuit had held productive meetings with the highway department over road improvements between downtown Austin and the track. Additional lanes could allow between 15,000 and 30,000 more fans to attend each day, according to his estimate.

A new Thursday attraction

COTA is also adding Thursday activity through a new “Grand PrixView” day. Entry will begin at $20, with F1 Academy action, a pit-lane walk and access to the fan zone available before the main race weekend begins.

Epstein said he was less concerned about how future technical rules and broadcasting rights might affect the event’s appeal. In his view, the demand to attend the United States Grand Prix remains substantial regardless of the ongoing debate over Formula 1’s regulations.
