Summerville stunner sinks Al-Ittihad as Al-Hilal reclaim Saudi Pro League summit in five-goal thriller

Crysencio Summerville's stunning second-half strike proved the difference as Al-Hilal edged Al-Ittihad 3-2 in a five-goal Saudi Pro League thriller, moving back to the top of the table and bringing the visitors' unbeaten start to an end.

Crysencio Summerville celebrates scoring Al-Hilal's winner against Al-Ittihad

Frenetic first half

The game caught fire immediately, with Ollie Watkins, Gabriel Martinelli and Saimon Bouabre all denied by saves inside the opening six minutes. The breakthrough arrived on 11 minutes: Al-Hilal moved the ball neatly down the right and Watkins pulled it back from the byline, with Martinelli adjusting his run quickly to turn a first-time finish past Predrag Rajkovic.

Al-Ittihad levelled just 11 minutes later through Youssef En-Nesyri. Finishing off a fast break, the striker latched onto Marwan Al Sahafi's throughball without having to break stride and curled a fine effort past Yassine Bounou.

Watkins restored Al-Hilal's lead on the half-hour mark, putting pressure on Danilo as the defender attempted a routine clearance before volleying in the loose ball. The striker was denied a second goal on the stroke of half-time, though, as he was adjudged to have turned the ball over the line using his arm, while Al-Ittihad were given a reprieve at the other end when Faris Abdi's own goal was ruled out — Kalidou Koulibaly had been offside when he knocked the ball down.

Moment of magic settles the contest

Summerville delivered the decisive blow in the 64th minute with a goal worthy of winning any match. The Dutch winger embarked on a lovely jinking run down the left, cut inside and bent a gorgeous strike into the bottom-right corner to make it 3-1.

Al-Ittihad set up a nervy ending when Ruben Neves' late tackle on Jan-Carlo Simic in the box was awarded as a penalty, with Steven Bergwijn emphatically firing it in after 89 minutes. But the visitors could not find an equaliser, and the match finished on a fiery note, with Al-Ittihad's players furiously surrounding the referee.

Watkins runs the show

Although Summerville scored the winner, it was Ollie Watkins who took the plaudits. The striker, who has impressed since his summer move from Aston Villa, netted his fifth goal of the campaign and took his tally of assists to six after setting up the other two goals on Saturday.

Watkins registered a joint-team-high three shots (level with Martinelli) and topped the match charts for chances created (four) and touches in the opposition box (11), despite having just 30 touches overall.

A FotMob snapshot of the 2026-27 season taken on 9 October 2026 had Summerville down for two goals and three assists from seven Saudi Pro League appearances, and the Dutch winger enhanced that return with Saturday's decisive contribution.

What it means

Al-Hilal have now recorded seven wins in the Saudi Pro League this season and sit top of the table, while also dealing Al-Ittihad their first defeat of the campaign. The visitors certainly had their chances, getting five of their eight shots on target, but they could not muster another late opening to force a draw.
