Gary Neville Tells Man Utd to 'Get a Grip' or Face a 'Worrying Few Weeks' After 10-Man Spurs Hold Them at Old Trafford

Neville Sounds the Alarm After Another Old Trafford Setback

Gary Neville has warned that Manchester United could be heading into a "worrying few weeks" if their players do not "get a grip" on their season, following a damaging 1-1 home draw with 10-man Tottenham Hotspur.

Michael Carrick's side saw their poor start to the campaign continue at Old Trafford on Saturday, as Dominic Solanke's late goal rescued a point for Spurs after they had been reduced to ten men. The result extended United's winless run to four games in all competitions and kept them 12th in the Premier League.

The mood inside Old Trafford was made clear by the home supporters, with boos ringing out at both half-time and full-time.

Neville Questions the Midfield Engine Room

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the former United right-back singled out the midfield pairing of Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo, arguing it lacks the dynamism required at the club.

"Tielemans and Mainoo, I think we've seen enough of it now," Neville said. "I'm not calling time on it because that's probably too drastic but I've seen enough to think that's not a midfield that's dynamic enough to play at this football club in the Premier League.

"I think they are both good players, by the way, individually. But sometimes you just have players that don't quite knit together or don't quite suit each other.

"I think when [Carlos] Baleba came on with Mainoo, it looked like there was a lot more energy."

A Daunting Fixture List Looms

Neville pointed to United's upcoming schedule as the reason for his concern, with a Champions League away trip to face Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid on Tuesday followed by a Premier League visit to Elland Road to take on Leeds, live on Sky Sports.

"There's going to have to be something done in there, and the rest of them are going to have to get a grip because they are going to a Diego Simeone Atletico Madrid and Elland Road," he said.

"If you're not quite right there from a mental and physical perspective, you're going to get found out.

"They've got a couple of days to recover, pick themselves up from this, and get going because if they don't get going, it's going to be a worrying few weeks."

The draw with Spurs was the third game this season in which Manchester United have failed to win when leading, following the 2-2 draw with Everton and the 3-2 loss to Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

Redknapp: 'The Squad Is Not Good or Strong Enough'

Jamie Redknapp felt the performance exposed a lack of cohesion as well as a lack of resilience, and joined Neville in calling for reinforcements to help Carrick.

"Brighton in the Carabao Cup, they were 2-0 up and lost 3-2," Redknapp said on Sky Sports. "That is unprecedented and does not happen at Old Trafford, except it does with this team.

"I don't see enough connections in that midfield and they look devoid of any confidence, ideas, or patterns of play, playing out the back.

"Tottenham were just much better than them in every department, but that is just a theme this season.

"Their energy levels are not good enough and they look loose going forward. There was no real structure.

"The squad is not good or strong enough and Michael [Carrick] needs help in that respect."

Pressure Piles on Carrick

The latest criticism follows a turbulent period for Carrick, who was already under scrutiny after United's 1-1 draw at Fulham in September 2026. In his role as a Sky Sports co-commentator on 20 September 2026, Neville called United's out-of-possession work a "genuine disgrace" and urged the manager to "stop defending" his players, while Carrick insisted his side had not been passive.

With United now facing Atletico Madrid, Leeds, Como, Bournemouth and Chelsea before the end of October, Neville's warning that the coming weeks could define their season is set to be tested almost immediately.
