Historic Start: Audi Scores Points in F1 Debut as Wheatley Hails 'Historic Moment'

Audi Makes Historic Formula 1 Debut with Points Finish

Audi Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley celebrating at Australian Grand Prix

Audi has made history in their Formula 1 debut, scoring points in their first-ever Grand Prix at the Australian Grand Prix. Brazilian driver Gabriel Bortoleto secured a ninth-place finish, bringing home the German manufacturer's first Formula 1 points in what Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley described as a "historic moment."

A Clean Execution Pays Off

The Audi team entered their debut season with a focused approach, having taken over the Sauber outfit and produced their own power unit. Wheatley revealed that the team spent the winter focusing on themselves rather than analyzing competitors' performances during testing in Bahrain.

"I think we spent the winter focusing on ourselves, not getting caught up in what other teams' performance was like, not spending hours analysing everyone else's runs in Bahrain," Wheatley said. "We just wanted to come here and execute a clean race weekend."

The strategy proved successful as Bortoleto converted a P10 grid slot into a points-scoring ninth place at the checkered flag, despite being on what was considered the slower two-stop strategy.

Mixed Emotions for the Team

The celebration was somewhat tempered by the fact that Audi only had one car competing on race day. Nico Hulkenberg was unable to start after being wheeled off the grid with a loss of telemetry. Wheatley was unable to confirm exactly what had happened to the German driver's car, simply stating that it "lost telemetry" on the way to the grid.

"I feel the yin and yang that the other driver didn't get a chance to start the race, but I think all in all, we can hold our head up high and say it's a good start to our journey," Wheatley added.

Bortoleto's Impressive Work Ethic

Wheatley was quick to praise Bortoleto's performance and dedication, highlighting the Brazilian driver's exceptional work ethic during the offseason preparation.

"He's a fast learner, and I've talked before about his work ethic, but I think I should mention it now because he spent the whole of January either on the simulator in Neuberg or in Hinwil. He based himself there," Wheatley explained.

"He could have stayed in Brazil for a little bit longer. He showed a tremendous work ethic. He's working super hard with the engineers on the R26 and the AFR26. And once again, I'm sat here thinking that he's developing really, really well as a driver and into, obviously, a future talent."

The Challenge Ahead

Audi faces unique challenges as the only team running the brand new Audi power unit, putting them at a disadvantage compared to established engine manufacturers like Mercedes and Ferrari who have multiple customer teams providing valuable data.

"[Sunday was] the first time we've had a chance to really look at what other teams are doing and how they're doing it," Wheatley noted. "We're fast learners, and I'm looking forward to seeing how that information can be used to benefit us."

A New Era of Formula 1

The Australian Grand Prix represented a race of discovery for all teams as they navigate a new era of F1 regulations. Wheatley expressed optimism about the competitive nature of the midfield battle.

"As the cars get more sophisticated, the engines become more efficient, the racing becomes closer," he said. "I think we're just at the early set of these regulations, and it's just a case of developing our cars all the way through it, including the power unit."

"Every time we take these brand-new cars to a new track with new characteristics, we could shake the order up. And the order is closer, I think, in the midfield than any of us were expecting, but maybe we'll be saying something different next week."

Looking Forward

Wheatley concluded with optimism about the journey ahead for Audi in Formula 1: "Let's get on the journey. It's going to be fascinating."

The historic points finish marks a promising start for Audi's Formula 1 venture, setting the stage for what could be an exciting development story throughout the season as the team continues to learn and improve their package.
